How are Calla boots made for wide feet and bunions?

Every Calla boot starts on a wider last with a hidden stretch panel over the big toe joint, a cushioned insole with arch support, and a standard-width heel so the boot actually stays on your foot.

• Hidden stretch panel at the big toe joint: built into every Calla boot, positioned where the bunion pushes widest. The panel gives where the bone sits rather than pressing a seam against it, which is the difference between a boot that gets more comfortable through the day and one that gets worse.
• Cushioned, arch-supported insole for steadier footing: every boot has one. The arch support holds your foot in a more natural position and takes load off the big toe joint, and the cushioning absorbs impact that a hard insole would send to the forefoot. If you wear your own orthotic (a custom foot support), the Savannah cowboy boots are the style with a removable insole.
• Soft uppers that flex over the joint: the uppers are leather, nubuck (leather buffed to a soft, suede-like nap) or suede, plus one tweed style, the Maya, all chosen because they flex where a stiff synthetic would press against the bunion. Linings vary across the range: the Abbie flat boots have a plush faux-fur interior for cold weather, the Maisie and Lucy ankle boots are lined with lamb's leather, and the rest use kid leather.
• EE to EEE width, one width per style: we don't offer a menu of width fittings. The Maya and Mischa ankle boots fit EE (standard wide); the rest fit up to EEE (extra wide) across the forefoot. Every style keeps a standard width at the heel.
• Heels from flat to 6cm, broad-based block heels or low kitten heels: the Abbie flat boots have a 4cm non-slip platform sole with no heel at all. Everything else has a heel, from 2cm on the Bella knee-highs to 6cm on the Maya ankle boots and the Maeve knee-highs. We use block heels (a broad, stable base) and kitten heels (a slim, low heel) only, because a thin stiletto shifts too much weight onto the big toe joint.

• Warmth and grip on a frosty morning: Abbie - Ice Nubuck Leather Boots are the only flat boots in the range, with a plush faux-fur interior, a 4cm non-slip platform sole for grip, and laces you can loosen across the forefoot if your bunion swells in the cold. No heel means no weight tipping forward onto the joint on an icy school run or dog walk. Also in Black Nubuck and Rust Nubuck. EEE width, flat.
• A gentle lift on a tender joint: if you're trying your first pair of boots built for bunions, Maisie - Black Suede Boots give you a 4cm kitten heel with soft suede that wraps gently around sensitive areas. A low-commitment first pair. Also in Cherry Suede. Not suitable for feet with a high instep (the arched top of the foot). Fits up to EEE, 4cm / 1.5 inch heel.
• All day on your feet, easy on and off: when your midfoot swells by afternoon and bending down to laces is the last thing you want, Lucy - Dark Navy Suede Boots have a side zip, a wide toe box for extra room, built-in arch support, and a hidden stretch panel at the big toe joint. The lamb's leather lining lies smooth against your skin where a rougher lining would rub. Fits up to EEE, 4cm / 1.5 inch heel.
• Height and polish for a smart day, on the widest foot: if you want more heel but struggle with zips and laces on an EEE foot, Miriam - Black Leather Boots have elastic side panels and a pull tab so you step straight in, with a gold buckle, a sturdy block heel and a square toe. The 5.5cm heel gives height on a broad, stable base. Also in Cognac Suede. EEE width, 5.5cm / 2.2 inch heel.
• Knee-high boots with a published calf measurement: if you've given up on tall boots because you can never tell whether the calf will fit before they arrive, Bella - Black Leather Boots have a 38cm / 14.9 inch leg circumference (the measurement around the widest part of the calf), so you can check before you buy. The 2cm heel is the lowest of the heeled styles, and Bella Black comes in half sizes (EU 36.5 to 41.5). Also in Espresso Suede. EEE width, 2cm / 0.8 inch heel.
• A taller heel in the same knee-high fit: Maeve - Black Leather Boots have a 6cm sculpted block heel on a square-toe silhouette with a 40cm shaft, and a side zip that makes them easy to get on and off. EEE width, 6cm / 2.4 inch heel.
• A sharper heel for an EE foot that swims in EEE: Mischa - Black Leather Boots are cut on an EE last with an oversized fold-over cuff (a turned-down collar of leather at the ankle) and a pointed toe, so the boot fits a standard-wide forefoot without the looseness an EEE would leave. Smart enough for a day at a desk and dinner afterwards. Mischa is also not suitable for feet with a high instep. Also in Metallic Silver, the only metallic colourway in the range. EE width, 4cm / 1.5 inch heel.
• Autumn workwear at a taller 6cm heel: Maya - Navy Tweed Boots have an almond toe (a softly rounded, slightly tapered toe), a kid leather lining and the same EE fit as the Mischa. EE width, 6cm / 2.3 inch heel.
• The western shape, made roomier for bunions: Savannah - Honey Suede Cowboy Boots swap the traditional pointed cowboy toe for a roomier round toe, so you can wear the western style day to day without pinching across the forefoot. The insole is removable if you wear your own orthotic, and the calf circumference is 33cm. EEE/WW width, 3.5cm / 1.3 inch heel.

Do Calla knee-high boots fit wide calves?

It depends on your calf measurement: Calla knee-high boots are cut wide at the forefoot, and each style has a fixed calf. The Bella - Black Leather Boots have a 38cm / 14.9 inch leg circumference, and the Maeve - Black Leather Boots have a 38cm calf circumference, widening to 39cm at the opening. Measure around the widest part of your calf, and if you're close to the boot's figure, contact us before you order.

What does EEE width mean in Calla boots?

EEE is Calla's extra wide fitting, the widest width Calla makes, one step up from EE across the forefoot. Calla labels its widths two ways: wide toe box shoes are E to EE, and extra wide fit shoes are EEE. In this collection, the Maya and Mischa fit EE, and every other boot fits up to EEE, all with a standard-width heel. To check yours, wrap a soft tape measure around the widest part of your foot, including any bunion, while you're standing, then use our measuring guide.

Which Calla boots are warmest for winter?

The Abbie is the warmest boot in this collection: it's the only one with a plush faux-fur lining, and its 4cm non-slip platform sole gives you grip. The laces let you loosen it across the forefoot if your bunion swells in the cold. The Abbie - Ice Nubuck Leather Boots also come in Black Nubuck and Rust Nubuck, in an EEE width.

Which of these boots are suitable for a high instep, and which are not?

Maisie and Mischa aren't suitable for feet with a high instep. The other styles (Abbie, Bella, Lucy, Maeve, Maya, Miriam and Savannah) don't have that restriction, and if your instep is particularly high, contact us before you order.

Do any of these wide fit boots come in half sizes?

Bella - Black Leather Boots is the only style offering half sizes, from EU 36.5 to 41.5. Every other style in the range is available in EU 36 to 42, in whole sizes only.
